Sensei J. Bennett, Founder of the Naga Ryu School

jbpic2.jpg

Jack "Grim" Bennett has been studying the martial arts for twenty-four years. His studies began in January 1979 at the Yoshukai Karate school on Noble Street, Anniston, Alabama under the instruction of the late Tommy McConnell. Yoshukai has for decades maintained the highest reputation as one of the finest martial arts institutions in the southeast and the world. "The Yoshukai institution is one of the best examples of a martial arts school you will find anywhere. It's standards, discipline, and teachings set the tone for my martial arts journey and I'm fortunate to have begun my studies there." It was here that Sensei Bennett was introduced to the code of Bushido which was to guide his life and studies for the next two decades.

In 1980 he began studying Korean Tang Soo Do under David Cohenoer in Ohatchee, Alabama and then under Mr. Cohenour's instructor, U.S. Army Sgt. Roger Steakley, President of the Southeastern Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan Asssociation at Truman Gymnasium, Fort McClellen, Alabama. After receiving a Black Belt under Sgt. Steakley's personal tutelage in 1981, Mr. Bennett furthered his fighting skills by seeking out and training under several skilled instructors. He has trained in Phillipino Kali, Tae Kwon Do, Aikido (Under U.K. Interclub Fighting Champion Andy Leeds), and, Kung Fu (under Sifu Deeno Connerly of Huntsville, Alabama).

In 1989, drawing on a decade of martial arts instruction tempered by experience in both controlled tournament competition and actual unarmed street combat as well as experience as a personal bodyguard in less-than-pristine establishments in Corpus Christi, TX, Mr. Bennett founded the Naga Ryu school, the cornerstone of which is the Naga Ryu Karate Do, a fighting art which honors his traditional Karate roots yet utilizes Jeet Kune Do concepts and emphasizes real-world practicality and modern survival skills.

In January 2001, Sensei Bennett and Master William Shell established the Truman Gymnasium Martial Arts Program. Students of all ages and all walks of life have come to this unique institution to not only learn the fighting skills with which to defend themselves, but the skills and virtues to succeed in every aspect of life.

An an experienced personal security specialist (trained by a top national military security organization), Mr. Bennett has been employed to lead event security by Calhoun County Fairgrounds as well as ACW professional wrestling events.
