School of Combat Arts

What We Are: We are a Budo Ryu, a "warrior way " school.

What We Do: We train students in practical, real-world fighting skills with which to physically defend themselves as well as train the mental discipline and poise with which to responsibly wield their skills and crush any challenge life throws their way.

What We DO NOT Do: We do not teach fancy katas set to music. We do not have demo teams with pretty uniforms and phony weapons decorated with shiny prism tape. We don't do choreographed comedy fights with costumed ninjas at demonstrations. There's no tanning beds and no "kickbox aerobics" or Tae Bo. We do not practice the fancy chop-sockey baloney taught in other schools which will GET YOU HURT or KILLED. We do not charge ridiculous amounts of money for testing fees and sign-up fees and we don't do dubious package deals and contracts which make you a financial prisoner. We do not get rich by any of this, but then, we do not have trouble sleeping at night. Best of all, we do not fear for our students when trouble comes their way.

For the past twenty years, those who sought out martial arts training in North Alabama were faced with very few choices. All that has changed with the opening of Naga Ryu Budo Kai. This unique school offers training in authentic combat arts including karate, samurai Sword, and weapons. The Naga Ryu school features a comprehensive program of combat training both armed and unarmed. Students are trained completely and give and are given choices they wouldn't have in a place which teaches a 'style'. The Naga Ryu dojo is a true fighting arts institution not subject to the limitations of a stylist school.

Not Just Another Martial Arts School

The Naga Ryu trains in Bushido, the Way of the Samurai. Our foundation is the philosophy and methodology of the ancient Samurai as they apply to the modern world. We train our students holistically, that is to say, as a whole. Our curriculum is comprehensive as it addresses the inner AND outer aspects of the warrior. Our outer skills are those we practice physically. Our approach to physical combat is one of practicality. We teach a fighting art, not a "style". There's no pretty chop-sockey tap-tap junk. We will not teach any student to react to an offensive technique with a dozen pretty fluttery moves when one or two effective ones will do the job better. Our self-defense teaching does not include scenarios with robotic, stiff-armed attackers and we do not teach a lot of prancing, leaping high kicks other schools seem so fond of which do little more than turn the practicioner into yet another "Karate Guy Gets His Tail Kicked by a Streetfighter" story rednecks like to tell their friends. We temper all this with inward training, which is the mental and psychological aspect of the warrior. This includes not only skills to dominate by superior, level-headed thinking, but also by the virtues of courage, honor, pride, loyalty, and ethics as well as skills to handle fear, stress, doubt and other negative things which take away the ability to perform and achieve goals. This is the kind of training which made the Samurai the greatest warriors on earth as well as skilled educators, artists, philosophers, administrators, and businessmen. The techniques they used in everyday life still reverberate in the business world today, if only on a subconscious level and can be found- and utilized in every area of life from dealing with difficult people to negotiating a business deal to just overcoming fears. If all you want to do is join a martial arts class to learn some pretty moves to impress your friends or to just help out in the remote chance someone will come at you holding a knife straight up over their head, there are schools in town just for you. If you're looking for a school where you can buy your way into a black belt in a few months, there's a couple which will be glad to take your money. This is not one of them. If you're looking for a school which will give you true warrior skills and the ability to CRUSH those challenges life throws your way, you have a home here at the Naga Ryu.

The time has come to choose your path.

What will be your "Way"?

Welcome New Students

For the benefit of our new arrivals and those who may not know us, I would like to take this opportunity to talk about who we are. We are a budo ryu (warrior school). We provide a broad scope of martial arts training without holding to a "style" or a narrow path of belief. There are no limitations which often cripple the "stylist". Bushido, the Way of the Samurai is our structure. It is entertwined in all that we teach.

What We Offer: We provide all our students with a well-rounded curriculum. We teach the ways of Bushido, the Japanese equivalent of the Knightly code of chivalry. Our combat classes include Naga Ryu Karate, and Kobudo, the way of weapons. This will all coincide with the disciplines that the Samurai represent: honor, duty, justice, courtesy, trust, knowledge and humility. Though our values are old, our teachings are based on the present. Our goal is to prepare students for the unknowable and to teach them to defend themselves from the dangers of the modern world . We teach a fighting art based on reality. Our defense scenarios do not include robotic, stiff-armed attackers holding knives over their heads and we do not teach a lot of leaping, prancing high kicks which are more of a danger to the martial artist than to his or her opponent. We temper all this with the inward training, the mental and spiritual aspect of the warrior which gives us the skills to conquer fear, stress, insecurity and other things which take away our ability to perform and succeed. In a world which isn't getting any easier or any nicer, there is no better gift to give yourself- or your child.

We are currently seeking a new facility. The new class schedule will hopefully be available soon. Please check back later for class days and times.
